The Sea Wolf

This is the finest version of the often-filmed Jack London novel, with Edward G. Robinson as the vicious "Wolf" Larsen, captain of the sinister ship the Ghost. John Garfield plays the sailor running away from his past, while Alexander Knox and Ida Lupino play a writer and an escapee of a reformatory rescued after a collision at sea. Other cast members include Gene Lockhart, Barry Fitzgerald and Howard Da Silva. A moody Warner Bros. exercise, with the fog-enshrouded world of the ship comprising the film's entire universe. Notable direction by Michael Curtiz and a fine score by Erich Wolfgang Korngold. (amctv.com)
