Tanks a Million

US (1941): Comedy

Fred Guiol directs this Hal Roach/UA piece of pre-WW II army fun, the first of the "Sgt. Doubleday" series. Dorian "Dodo" Doubleday (William Tracy) is drafted and and is enthusiastic about becoming a member of the Army. He remembers everything he reads, so he gets hold of some military manuals, reads them and "knows" everything about the Army. So in no time he is off to NCO training to become a Sergeant. This drives Sgt. Ames (Joe Sawyer) crazy. All this takes about the first ten minutes of the movie. The rest of the movie is Ames trying to catch now-Sgt. Doubleday messing up, and Doubleday coming out smelling like a rose. James Gleason plays Col. "Spitfire" Barkley, and Noah Beery Jr., is Charlie Cobb. (IMDb)
