You'll Never Get Rich
US (1941): Musical/Crime/Romance/Comedy
Fred Astaire and Rita Hayworth make a smart, sexy pair, perhaps even more electric than the better-known screen coupling of Astaire and Ginger Rogers. Choreographer Astaire leads Hayworth through a few steps and she leads him on a merry romantic chase. Producer Robert Benchley uses Astaire as a cover for his own aspirations toward Hayworth, though at first she's cool toward the choreographer. Her army captain boyfriend lets the show go on when Astaire is drafted in the middle of their show. The Cole Porter songs include "Since I Kissed My Baby Goodbye," "Wedding Cake Walk," and "Dream Dancing." Sidney Lanfield directs for Columbia. (amctv.com)
