George Washington Slept Here
US (1942): Comedy
Hilarious Kaufman-and-Hart cautionary tale about the dangers of moving to the country. Benny gets the opportunity for many double takes, as his comfortable city life moves north to a rambling wreck in Connecticut. The new country squire tries to rein in his wife (Ann Sheridan) while holding the workmen and neighbors at bay. Prime Benny performance of a terrific script. The film differs from its theatrical parent to accommodate Jack Benny's style of comedy. The character personalities of Bill Fuller and his wife are reversed, making Bill the city-dweller reluctant to move. William Keighley directs a Warners cast that also includes Charles Coburn, Percy Kilbride, Hattie McDaniel, William Tracy, Joyce Reynolds, Lee Patrick and Franklin Pangborn. (amctv.com)
