Moontide
US (1942): Thriller
This hard-luck tale features French film star Jean Gabin in his Hollywood debut as the happy-go-lucky sailor Bobo, who can't penetrate his hangover to remember if he committed last night's murder. His mate Tiny (Thomas Mitchell) assures him he did, and Tiny promises he won't tell if he can get a little help from Bobo on some shady business. Bobo falls for waitress Anna (Ida Lupino) and she discovers that it's Tiny who's guilty after all. The fight that follows sends one of the sailors into the ocean. Director Fritz Lang was replaced by Archie Mayo after four shooting days. Note the contributions of gifted writers John O'Hara and Nunnally Johnson (who was uncredited). Spanish surrealist painter Salvador Dali created five sketches and three paintings for the film. Dali's artwork was used during a nightmare sequence when Bobo is drunk. (20th Century-Fox) (amctv.com)
