My Gal Sal
US (1942): Biography/Musical/Dance
This period-piece musical comedy traces the career of 1890s songwriter Paul Dreiser (Victor Mature), brother to the novelist Theodore Dreiser, as he leaves Indiana for Broadway. In New York City, Paul encounters the dazzling show-stopper Sally Elliott (Rita Hayworth). The two don't exactly hit it off, but their bumbling romance Ð with the help of Paul's tune "My Gal Sal" Ð hits the big time. Songs include "I's Your Honey If You Wants Me Liza Jane," "Mr. Volunteer," "Oh, the Pity of It All," "On the Big White Way" (with a rare on-screen appearance by legendary choreographer Hermes Pan as Hayworth's parther) and "The Convict and the Bird." Irving Cummings directs for Fox. Supporting cast includes John Sutton, Carole Landis, James Gleason, Phil Silvers and Walter Catlett. (amctv.com)
