Now, Voyager

US (1942): Romance/Drama

"Now, Voyager, sail forth to seek and find." Claude Rains is a psychiatrist who quotes this line from Walt Whitman to inspire the repressed Bette Davis. Soon, the shy, sheltered spinster is brought out of her shell and falls in love with handsome, suave Paul Henreid, though she knows he will never leave his wife. Through years of trials, their love endures and she becomes a surrogate mother to Henreid's daughter (an uncredited Janis Wilson). The quintessential Warner Bros. tearjerker, with a lush Max Steiner score.

Davis credited the famous gesture in Now, Voyager in which Henreid's character lights two cigarettes and then passes one to Davis as being Henreid's inspiration, not director Irving Rapper's. Cast includes Gladys Cooper, Bonita Granville, John Loder, Ilka Chase, Lee Patrick, Mary Wickes and Franklin Pangborn.
