Orchestra Wives

US (1942): Romance/Drama

In spite of their widely publicized and microscopically examined breakup, The Beatles didn't invent the concept of a band on the rocks due to troublesome romances. A swingin' story of tension on the road, replete with a jealous young wife (Ann Rutherford), a flirty singer (Lynn Bari) with the hots for Rutherford's husband (George Montgomery), and a chorus of sensible, veteran road wives. And, of course, Glenn Miller's band, in Miller's last screen appearance before his plane disappeared over the English Channel. (It was revealed in 1985 that RAF pilots returning from an aborted run over Germany loosed their bombs on the Channel, hitting Miller's plane.) Watch for a young jazz aficionado soon to be known as "The Great One" (Jackie Gleason) as the bass player. Contains the songs "I've Got a Gal in Kalamazoo," "At Last," and "Serenade in Blue." Archie Mayo directs a Fox cast that also includes Carole Landis, Cesar Romero and The Nicholas Brothers. (amctv.com)
