The Pied Piper
US (1942): Drama/War
After losing his only son in the opening days of the war, the last thing the grieving Monty Woolley wants to have interrupt his French fishing vacation are more children. Yet as the Germans plow through Belgium, two English children, Roddy McDowall and Anne Baxter, are put in his hands. Wooley's task of getting them to the English Channel before the war catches up snowballs, and he is leading a small troop of kids when he encounters a German major played by Otto Preminger. When told to be more patient with his young costars, Woolley was reported to have told director Irving Pichel, "I shall pat each of the little darlings on their heads until they drop dead."
