The Pride of the Yankees

US (1942): Biography/Sports/Drama

This is one of the greatest of sports films and a much-lauded portrait of courage. Gary Cooper plays Lou Gehrig, the first baseman for the fabled New York Yankees of the golden age of baseball, who suffered from a crippling and incurable disease that came to bear his name. The film's final scene of his farewell address at Yankee Stadium is a moving valedictory to a storied career. In a famous example of Hollywood photographic magic, to play left-handed Gehrig at bat, right-handed Cooper wore a uniform with the number reversed and ran from home plate to third base. The film was then re-aligned to produce an accurate mirror image. Sam Wood directs a cast that also includes Teresa Wright, Babe Ruth, Walter Brennan, Dan Duryea and Elsa Janssen and Ludwig Stössel as Mom and Pop Gehrig. (amctv.com)
