US (1942): Romance/Drma

In the hands of any other cast and crew, the implausibility of this plot from the novel by James Hilton would torpedo the whole production. But Mervyn LeRoy and his leads, Ronald Colman and Greer Garson, make this a touching romantic melodrama that transcends the story. Industrial scion Colman emerges from the WW I trenches mute and amnesiac. When he wanders from his ward into a small town, showgirl Garson takes him in, soothes his injuries, and nurtures his writing ability. While away from Garson and their son, an injury jars his memory, though he loses the years spent with Garson. Back at work in the family factories, Colman hires Garson as an assistant without recognizing her. While revisiting the small town with Garson, his memories return and the couple is fully reunited. Cast also includes Philip Dorn, Susan Peters, Henry Travers, Reginald Owen, Rhys Williams, Una O'Connor, Alan Napier and Margaret Wycherly. (amctv.com)
