This Above All

US (1942): War/Romance/Drama

A wartime romantic drama set in Britain tells the story of working-class Tyrone Power as he overcomes his resentment of the upper classes and rejoins the war effort. Wounded in action at Dunkirk, the bitter Power returns to London where he is fixed up with Joan Fontaine, a rich heiress who's joined up with the regular London girls of the WAAF. As love grows between them, he discovers her background and she discovers that he is about to be branded a deserter. An air raid changes both their lives when Power's courage leads to a life-threatening injury. Originally slated to be filmed on location in England, but the outbreak of World War II made that impossible. Fox had to build a $26,000 set designed to match the look of some background footage previously shot in England. Anatole Litvak directs a cast that also includes Thomas Mitchell, Henry Stephenson, Nigel Bruce, Gladys Cooper, Philip Merivale, Sara Allgood and Alexander Knox. (20th Century-Fox) (amctv.com)
