To the Shores of Tripoli
US (1942): Drama/War
This flag waver, one of the first released after America's entry into World War II, focuses on Chris Winters (John Payne), a cocky Marine recruit who learns the true meaning of "semper fi" under the tutelage of tough drill sergeant Dixie Smith (Randolph Scott). Along the way, Chris also finds time to fall for a supple Navy nurse (Maureen O'Hara, her trademark red hair shimmering in her first Technicolor film). To encourage recruitment, the Marine Corps allowed the studio to shoot on location at its base in San Diego. Portions of the film were also shot in Hawaii just prior to the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. H. Bruce Humberstone directs for Fox. Cast also includes Nancy Kelly, William Tracy, Max "Slapsie Maxie" Rosenbloom, Harry Morgan, Minor Watson and Alan Hale Jr. (amctv.com)
