Air Force

US (1943): Drama/War

The story of the crew manning the "Mary Ann," a B-17 Flying Fortress in action throughout the Pacific, is tailor-made for director Howard Hawks, the undisputed master of men-under-pressure adventures. Stirring aerial battle scenes and believable dialogue lift this far above the average WWII propaganda vehicle. A real B-17 bomber was used for many of the shots in the film. The airplane later returned to active duty in the Pacific and was lost at sea with the entire crew. The interior shots for were filmed within an elaborate Warner Bros. replica of the airplane. The bomber crew in the film includes John Ridgely, John Garfield, Harry Carey, Gig Young, Arthur Kennedy, Charles Drake, George Tobias, Robert Wood and Ray Montgomery. (amctv.com)
