The Amazing Mrs. Holliday
US (1943): Comedy/Drama
A missionary tries to outwit the US government and smuggle Chinese orphans into the country. This is a delightful and touching film, superbly directed by Bruce Manning )and an uncredited Jean Renoir) and scripted by Boris Ingster and Leo Townsend. Deanna Durbin is a missionary's daughter who returns to America with an array of war orphans. Through a misunderstanding she claims to have married a wealthy sea captain and, as he is lost at sea, his family takes her in. Soon she is being courted by the captain's son, charmingly played by Edmond O'Brien. The whole confection is very heartwarming and touching, never cloying. There's a marvelous piece of character acting by Barry Fitzgerald. Other cast members include Arthur Treacher, Harry Davanport and Frieda Inescort. (Arne Andersen, IMDb)
