Coney Island

US (1943): Musical/Dance/Romance/Comedy

This lush period musical set in turn-of-the-century New York stars Betty Grable as an ambitious showgirl caught between club owner Cesar Romero and smooth-talking George Montgomery, who starts managing Grable's career and wants more than just her name in the lights. As the rivals bicker, Grable lights up the boardwalk. Songs include "Pretty Baby," "Live from Louisville," "Oh Susanna," "Deep River," and "Cuddle Up a Little Closer." Walter Lang directs a cast that also includes Charles Winninger, Phil Silvers, Matt Briggs and Paul Hurst. Remade seven years later as Wabash Avenue (1950) with Grable again in the lead.
