The Gang's All Here(a.k.a. "The Girls He Left Behind" -- UK) US (1943): Romance/Comedy/Musical
A Busby Berkeley extravaganza presumably about a nightclub singer (Alice Faye) who's in love with a soldier whose fabulously wealthy parents allow a lavish show to be staged on their estate. What the film is really about: Berkeley's orgiastic musical numbers, particularly the Carmen Miranda fever dream, "The Lady in the Tutti-Frutti Hat." Film historian David Thomson noted that the movie "contains in its opening sequence one of cinema's most breathtaking traveling shots and, at its conclusion, the endlessly erectile banana routine -- lewdness has never been as merry." Berkeley's cast also includes Phil Baker, Benny Goodman and His Orchestra, Eugene Pallette, Charlotte Greenwood, Edward Everett Horton and James Ellison. (20th Century-Fox) (amctv.com)
