The Human Comedy

US (1943): Drama/War

Small-town life during WW II illuminated by William Saroyan's story (adapted by Howard Estabrook) and Mickey Rooney's performance. The sentimental story depicts a telegram delivery boy (Rooney) whose messages almost always spell disaster. The lad learns about life from his widowed mother and philosophical old boss. One of Rooney's best roles. Cast also includes Frank Morgan, James Craig, Marsha Hunt, Fay Bainter, Ray Collins, Van Johnson and Donna Reed. Stay away from the colorized version.

The Human Comedy was the favorite film of MGM mogul Louis B. Mayer, who once paid author William Saroyan to come to the studio and tell stories. Years later, Saroyan would pen a savage caricature of Mayer in his drama Get Away Old Man. (amctv.com)
