Madame Curie

US (1943): Biography

Greer Garson and Walter Pidgeon return a year after the triumph of Mrs. Miniver in this Mervyn LeRoy-directed MGM biopic about the famous husband-and-wife team who discovered radium. Though the love story between the shy Pierre (Pidgeon) and the Polish student Marie (Garson) gets center stage, this is an unusually intelligent look at the scientific quest that produced one of the century's major triumphs, but ended in tragedy. Dignified and moving. Cast also includes Henry Travers, Albert Bassermann, Robert Walker, C. Aubrey Smith, Dame May Whitty, Van Johnson and Reginald Owen. Little Margaret O'Brien plays the 5-year-old Irene Curie. (amctv.com)
