The Moon and Sixpence

US (1942): Drama

W. Somerset Maugham's famous novel about a Paul Gauguin-like painter (George Sanders) who quits his job as a stockbroker, abandons family and civilization, and moves to a South Seas island gets a reverent and literary treatment. Despite an encompassing narration by Herbert Marshall playing Maugham, this is Sanders's film and his transformation from cad to introspective artist is both convincing and moving. Albert Lewin directs; cast also includes Doris Dudley, Eric Blore, Altert Bassermann, Florence Bates, Steven Geray and Elena Verdugo. Filmed in black and white, with Gauguin's paintings in color at the conclusion. Gauguin's son threatened to sue the studio if any of his father's paintings were used, so the studio hired Dolya Goutman to create the murals seen in the film. (Loew-Lewin/UA) (amctv.com)
