Phantom of the Opera

US (1943): Romance/Drama/Horror

The first sound version of the classic backstage thriller is more of a costume romance than a horror film. Claude Rains draws a sympathetic rendering of the phantom who obsesses over a young soprano (Susanna Foster). Here he is a meek violinist who worships Foster from afar and devotes his life to her career. Cast also features Nelson Eddy, Edgar Barrier, Leo Carrillo, Fretz Feld, Hume Cronyn and Fritz Leiber. Arthur Lubin directs for Universal. (amctv.com)
