Sahara

US (1943): Drama/War

In a premier WW II adventure set under the relentless, blistering Saharan sun, Humphrey Bogart mans a crippled tank retreating into the Libyan desert. As they search desperately for water, the tank squad picks up various stragglers from defeated Allied units. The growing band fights off air attacks and then vies with a Nazi battalion for a nearly dry well at a desert ghost town. There, Bogart spurs the defeated, parched men into making a stand against the overwhelming numbers of Germans. Never predictable, the script from future Hollywood Ten member John Howard Lawson fills the screen with action and memorable characters. Cast also includes Bruce Bennett, J. Caroll Naish, Lloyd Bridges, Rex Ingram, Richard Nugent, Kurt Krueger and Dan Duryea. Sahara, directed by Zoltan Korda for Columbia, displays Korda's left-leaning politics, an ideology which had previously been subverted by his brother, producer Alexander Korda, who was pro-imperialist.
