Thank Your Lucky Stars

US (1943): Musical/Comedy

This is the Warner Bros. entry into the cavalcade of stars wartime benefits that saw all the actors' salaries donated to the Hollywood Canteen. Virtually every Warner contract player shows up here in a silly story of a variety show and Eddie Cantor's efforts to be involved while his double convinces everyone that he's the real Cantor.

A lollapalooza of song and dance, even including a controversial routine by Errol Flynn in which he plays a Cockney vet trying to snitch ale while distracting pubgoers with tall tales about his wartime exploits in "That's What You Jolly Well Get." Flynn was alleged to have taken off from his dual statutory rape trial in early 1943 to fulfill his commitment to this movie.

The film's other numbers include "They're Either Too Young or Too Old" (a rare glimpse of Bette Davis singing an Academy Award®-nominated song), "Blues in the Night," "Ridin' for a Fall," and many more. Dinah Shore's screen debut. George Tobias replaced Paul Henreid in the musical number featuring Ida Lupino and Olivia de Havilland. Henreid was unable to learn the jitterbug routine. David Butler directs. (amctv.com)
