Thousands Cheer
US (1943): Musical/Dance/War
MGM's version of the benefit flag-waver put the entire back lot on dress parade (see Stage Door Canteen and This Is the Army) and features Gene Kelly in one of his earliest starring roles as a reluctant army private who falls for the colonel's daughter (Kathryn Grayson). Soon enough, plans are being made for a USO show that will bring out all the stars and entertain the servicemen. Let the dancing begin. Featured songs include "Honeysuckle Rose" and Judy Garland's "The Joint Is Really Jumping Down at Carnegie Hall." George Sidney directs.
The two writers of Thousands Cheer found themselves on opposite sides of the political divide during the postwar blacklist era. Paul Jarrico was blacklisted; Richard Collins named 26 names, including Jarrico's, before the HUAC. (amctv.com)
