A Guy Named Joe

US (1943): Drama/War/Romance/Fantasy

Reassuring WW II-era fantasy about a flier who visits Earth to guide a younger pilot through the hazards of battle. He also lends a hand through the minefields of the heart when he steers the young pilot toward his grieving girlfriend. Steven Spielberg mined the story line for his Always (1989).

Actor Van Johnson was seriously injured in an automobile accident while filming A Guy Named Joe. MGM wanted to replace him, but Spencer Tracy insisted they shoot scenes without Johnson during his convalescence. Victor Fleming directs a cast that also includes Irene Dunne, Ward Bond, James Gleason, Lionel Barrymore, Barry Nelson, Esther Williams, Henry O'Neill and Don DeFore. (amctv.com)
