Jammin' the Blues
US (1944): Short/Musical
Prominent jazz musicians of the 1940's get together for a rare filming of a jam session. Marie Bryant has a vocal and does the jitterbug (Lindy Hop) with dancer Archie Savage. It is notable that for several cast members, this is their only known appearance in a theatrical film. Life photographer Gjon Mili directs. Jazzmen include Lester Young (tenor sax), George "Red" Callender (bass), Harry Edison (trumpet), Marlowe Morris (piano), Sidney Catlett (drums), Barney Kessel (guitar), Jo Jones (drums), John Simmons (bass) and Illinois Jacquet (tenor sax). (IMDb)
This film has been described as "Maybe the greatest film ever about jazz." It is included on the DVD of another Gjon Mili film (with producer/collaborator Norman Granz) called Improvisation: Charlie Parker, Ella Fitzgerald and More.
