Laura

US (1944): Mystery/Suspense/Romance/Crime

A classic noirish mystery with a consummate ensemble of actors. Dana Andrews adroitly plays the detective who delves into the murder of the stunningly beautiful Laura (Gene Tierney, in her signature role), with whom it seems everyone, including the detective himself, is understandably in love. But Clifton Webb steals the show as Laura's creepily elegant mentor, society columnist Waldo Lydecker. Based on the novel by Vera Caspary. Otto Preminger took over the direction of this compelling mystery classic, which was originally in the hands of Rouben Mamoulian. Cast also includes Vincent Price and Dame Judith Anderson. And, of course, there's that haunting score by David Raksin.

The restored video includes previously excised footage. It was announced at the time that Laura was Broadway star Clifton Webb's film debut; but in fact, he had played supporting roles in several silent films during the 1920s. (20th Century-Fox) (amctv.com)
