The Seventh Cross

US (1944): Drama/War

This is a wartime melodrama and a strong anti-Nazi statement from Austrian-born director Fred Zinnemann. Seven escapees from a concentration camp in 1936 have seven crosses nailed to trees awaiting their capture. Six are used for crucifixions; only embittered Spencer Tracy, who gradually learns to trust his fellow man again, makes his way to Holland. An effective, atmospheric thriller with great performances from Tracy, Hume Cronyn, and Jessica Tandy (in her screen debut). Zinnemann's MGM cast also includes Signe Hasso, Agnes Moorehead, Herbert Rudley, Felix Bressart, Ray Collins and George Macready. (amctv.com)
