Since You Went Away

US (1944): Family/War/Drama

This touching WW II picture focuses on the home front and the war's impact on the lives of average Americans. Claudette Colbert keeps her household and two daughters (Jennifer Jones and Shirley Temple) together as they face day-to-day life without the man of the family. The family deals with economic pressures (they take on boarder Monty Woolley) and romances (Jones's relationship with soldier Robert Walker -- her real-life husband at the time, but their marriage had dissolved before production began, making their co-starring assignment extremely awkward, compounded by the fact that Jones was dating the film's producer, David O. Selznick.). Based on Margaret Buell Wilder's letters to her overseas husband. Directed by John Cromwell. Other cast members include Joseph Cotten, Lionel Barrymore, Hattie McDaniel, Agnes Moorehead, Guy Madison, Albert Bassermann, Keenan Wynn and Craig Stevens. (amctv.com)
