Sweet and Low-Down

US (1944): Musical/Romance/Drama

Benny Goodman collaborated with screenwriters Richard English and Edward Haldman on the script of an original musical biography, The King of Swing. This was eventually replaced by English and Haldman's fictional screenplay, which became Sweet and Lowdown. Take a look if you're a fan of Goodman. Young trombone player James Cardwell realizes a dream when he is given the chance to play with the Benny Goodman Orchestra. His ego soon swells, and ambitious girlfriend Linda Darnell encourages him to start his own band, which fails miserably. He swallows his pride and returns to his factory job, but Benny gives him another chance. Goodman's swinging tunes include "I'm Making Believe," "Hey, Bub, Let's Have a Ball," "Jersey Bounce," "Let's Dance," and "I Yi Yi Yi Yi, I Like You." Archie Mayo directs a Fox cast that also includes Lynn Bari, Jack Oakie, Allyn Joslyn and Dickie Moore. (amctv.com)
