The Uninvited

US (1944): Horror/Mystery/Romance

An engaging ghost tale with a suspenseful story. Soon after moving into a creepy house on Cornwall's cliffs -- a house purchased at a suspiciously low price -- music critic Ray Milland and his sister Ruth Hussey experience unusual occurrences. Flowers wilt, the smell of mimosas wafts through the rooms, and Gail Russell seems drawn to the house despite her grandfather Donald Crisp's warnings. The mystery of Russell's mother's death unravels when not one but two spirits reappear. Lewis Allen directs a cast that also includes Cornelia Otis Skinner, Dorothy Stickney, Barbara Everest and Alan Napier. Though The Uninvited is set in 1937, look for blacked-out headlights on cars, a practice which was common during the war years. (Paramount) (amctv.com)
