The Enchanted Cottage
US (1945): Romance/Fantasy
The legendary height of Hollywood melodramatic fantasy. On the eve of his wedding, a handsome, wealthy man (Robert Young) is called to active duty. The young flier returns disfigured and embittered after a plane crash. His fiancée deserts him, and he hides in the cottage that would have been their honeymoon love nest. A plain, painfully shy woman (Dorothy McGuire) also hiding from the world's cruelty lingers by the seaside cottage. The unwanted loners befriend each other and agree to marry as no one else will have them. Their love transforms them: he is restored to his former self and she becomes lovely in the enchanted space their love has created. John Cromwell directs this RKO tear-gusher. Cast also includes Herbert Marshall, Mildred Natwick, Spring Byington, Hillary Brooke and Richard Gaines. Dewitt Bodeen, who wrote The Enchanted Cottage in 1944, was better known for writing Cat People, versions of which were made in 1942 and 1982. (amctv.com)
