Frenchman's Creek
US (1944): Historical/Romance
A Daphne du Maurier novel brought to glorious, colorful life by Mitchell Leisen features a lovely aristocrat (Joan Fontaine) fleeing a wimpy husband (Ralph Forbes) and his sinister pals -- straight into the arms of a pirate. This proto-bodice-ripper set in 17th-century England offers astounding sets, costumes, and score, satisfying romantic melodrama, and swashbuckling action. Cast also includes Arturo de Córdova, Basil Rathbone, Nigel Bruce and Cecil Kellaway.
Director Mitchell Leisen began his career in costume and set design. Although he is not credited with the art direction in Frenchman's Creek, he assisted with both the set -- which won an Oscar® -- and costume designs. (Paramount) (amctv.com)
