Love Letters

US (1945): Drama/Romance/Crime

In this sparkling, Cyrano-like tale, Jennifer Jones marries a soldier (Roger Sully) after his friend (Joseph Cotten) writes her beautiful letters. When her husband dies at the hand of her stepmother after he attacks her, Jones is stricken with amnesia. Cotten comes to investigate his friend's murder, and the author of the letters finds his love rekindled. William Dieterle directs for Paramount. The cast also includes Ann Richards, Cecil Kellaway, Gladys Cooper, Anita Louise and Reginald Denny.

The screenplay was written by Ayn Rand from the novel Pity My Simplicity by Chris Massie. In her brief Hollywood career, Rand co-wrote one other screenplay (You Came Along, also 1945) and adapted her own novel, The Fountainhead (1949), for the screen. (amctv.com)
