A Medal for Benny

US (1945): Drama/Comedy

A WW II satire (based on a story by John Steinbeck) on the nature of heroism and public image. When Benny, a local troublemaker, earns a posthumous Congressional Medal of Honor, all who once knew (and disliked) him laud him as a hero. His father, J. Carrol Naish, refuses to cash in. And Benny's onetime girlfriend, Dorothy Lamour, finds love with Arturo De Córdova, who goes off to war in an effort to live up to the image of his predecessor. Irving Pichel directs for Paramount. In 1954, NBC broadcast a live performance of the teleplay as its first cross-country color telecast from their Burbank studios. Buzz Kulick directed a cast that featured J. Carroll Naish, Anne Bancroft and Rick Jason. Visit Scrapbooks of My Mind for Jason's amusing account of that live telecast.
