Kitty
US (1945): Romance/Drama
A signature role for Paulette Goddard as an impoverished, beautiful young Cockney girl in 18th-century England. She is spotted by artist Thomas Gainsborough (Cecil Kellaway) and has her portrait painted. The painting catches the eye of Sir Hugh Marcy (Ray Milland), a nobleman who takes her in and decides to turn her into a lady. This he does successfully and Kitty has a marriage arranged for her to an aging ironmonger. Her husband dies shortly afterward and Kitty moves on, marrying another man while pregnant from her first husband. When her second husband also dies, Kitty finally manages to find love with the one who has loved her all the while. A rich costume romance with Mitchell Leisen's customary good taste. The sumptuous costumes and Oscar®-nominated sets for Kitty were too good to waste: they were used again a year later for the Bob Hope vehicle Monsieur Beaucaire (1946). (Columbia) (amctv.com)
