Gary Cooper and Ingrid Bergman reunite after their success in For Whom the Bell Tolls (1943). This costume drama based on an Edna Ferber novel finds Bergman a Creole belle returning to New Orleans from Paris in 1875. She's determined to find a rich husband and wreak havoc on her father's despised family, though the first man she lays eyes on is Texas gambler Cooper. She follows him to the ritzy watering hole of Saratoga Springs where she pretends to be a wealthy French mademoiselle. Bergman snares financier John Warburton, but the arrangements fall apart when she sees Cooper, the man she truly loves, in danger. Elegantly produced if something of a yawner.
