Edward Dmytryk directs this taut thriller for RKO. Homicide Capt. Finlay (Robert Young) finds evidence that one or more of a group of demobilized soldiers is involved in the death of Joseph Samuels (Sam Levene). In flashbacks, we see the night's events from different viewpoints as Sergeant Keeley (Robert Mitchum) investigates on his own, trying to clear his friend Mitchell (George Cooper), to whom circumstantial evidence points. Then the real, ugly motive for the killing begins to dawn on both Finlay and Keeley. John Paxton adapted Richard Brooks' novel. Cast also includes Robert Ryan, Gloria Grahame, Paul Kelly, Steve Brodie and Tom Keene. (IMDb)
