Ride the Pink Horse

US (1947): Drama/Film-Noir/Mystery/Thriller

Robert Montgomery directs and stars in this excellent thriller. In the bordertown of San Pablo, preparing for an annual 'Mexican Fiesta,' arrives Gagin (Montgomery): tough, mysterious and laconic. His mission: to find the equally mysterious Frank Hugo (Fred Clark), evidently for revenge; or is it blackmail? FBI agent Retz (Art Smith) is also after the elusive Hugo. Everyone in town is enigmatic, especially Pila (Wanda Henrdrix), a mystical teenager who follows Gagin around and has premonitions of his death. Also involved are a classic femme fatale and an antique carousel with a pink horse... Thomas Gomez earned a Best Supporting Actor nomination for his portrayal of Pancho. Ben Hecht adapted Dorothy B. Hughes' novel. (Universal-International) (IMDb)
