UK (1948): Drama

In this film of the classic Shakespeare play, a Danish prince (Laurence Olivier) seeks to avenge his father's death when his uncle (Basil Sydney) murders his father, succeeds him as King, and marries the Queen (Eileen Herlie). Along the way, Hamlet spurns his girlfriend (Jean Simmons), scolds his mother, contemplates suicide, and kills some folks. Supporting players include Anthony Quayle, Peter Cushing, Stanley Holloway and Norman Wooland.

Olivier was 41 when Hamlet was released. Eileen Herlie, who played Hamlet's mother Gertrude, was 28. With this film Olivier became the first person ever to direct themselves to a Best Actor or Actress Oscar. (IMDb)
