Portrait of Jennie
(a.k.a. "Jennie" -- UK, and "Tidal Wave")

US (1948): Romance/Drama/Fantasy/Mystery

Struggling artist Eben Adams (Joseph Cotten) meets an enchanting young girl in the park (Jennifer Jones) who seems to be from a previous life. Still, he is taken by her charms. On each subsequent meeting, she is older and more beautiful. He soon falls in love with her and decides he must paint her portrait. More of a challenge though is his attempt to piece together the facts which led to her untimely death, and to keep it from happening again.

William Dieterle directs a cast that also includes Ethel Barrymore, Lillian Gish, Cecil Kellaway and David Wayne. Although almost the entire film is in black and white, the tidal wave sequence towards the end is shown in green tint, and the final shot of the completed portrait of Jennie is in full Technicolor©. The original theatrical releases in L.A. and New York presented the tidal wave sequence on a special pre-Cinemascope© wide screen. (Vanguard/Selznick) (IMDb)
