Saraband for Dead Lovers

UK (1948): Romance/Drama

This is a fine British film dealing with the Hanoverian plot to take over the English crown, placing George I on the throne. Fine acting from all concerned. Originally titled Saraband. Joan Greenwood as the discarded queen who seeks solace in the arms of a young guardsman (Stewart Granger) is exceptional, but the acting trophy goes to Flora Robson who should have netted a Supporting Actress Oscar® nomination for her finely shaded performance as a ruthless, yet utterly human court intriguer. Directed by Basil Dearden. Early film work by actors Anthony Quayle and Michael Gough. (Arne Andersen, IMDb)
