Van Gogh
France (1948): Short
Starting only with the works of Vincent Van Gogh, director Alain Resnais relates the life of the painter and his search for light and pictorial truth, which ultimately led to his suicide. By choosing black and white, the film underlines the dramatic architecture of the artist's tableaux, which are accellerated in very fast editing -- evoking the artist's madness -- until they dissolve into the black of death. This treatment was highly innovative for its time, making this film an outstanding work in the history of documentaries on art. Written by Gaston Diehl and Robert Hessens; produced by Diehl, Hessens and Pierre Braunberger (who was unnamed with nomination); narrated by Calude Dauphin. (Translated from Agnès Rochi, cnc.fr.)
