US (1950): Prison/Crime/Drama/Film-Noir

Frightened 19-year-old Marie Allen (Eleanor Parker) gets sent to an Illinois penitentiary for being an accomplice in an armed robbery. A sympathetic prison head (Agnes Moorehead) tries to help, but her efforts are subverted by cruel matron Evelyn Harper (Hope Emerson). Marie's harsh experiences turn her from doe-eyed innocent to hard-nosed con. What else can you expect with lines like Hope Emerson's: "Let's you and me get acquainted honey. You may be a number to others but not to me. Sit down in this chair, it's kinda roomy." John Cromwell directs for Warners. Cast also includes Ellen Corby, Betty Garde, Jan Sterling, Lee Patrick, Jane Darwell and Sheila MacRae (billed as Sheila Stevens). (IMDb)
