The Men(a.k.a. "Battle Stripe" -- USA reissue title) US (1950): Drama/War
In his film debut, Marlon Brando plays a sullen wheelchair-bound paraplegic war veteran who learns to deal with his self-pity and adjust to life. Brando's performance was a departure from Hollywood acting of the period and he prepared for the role by living in a ward with veterans. Fred Zinnemann directs this U/A release. Cast also includes Teresa Wright, Everett Sloane and Jack Webb. Despite good reviews and much press about Hollywood's latest anti-star, the film did little business and it took Brando's next film, A Streetcar Named Desire (1951), to make him a screen sensation.
