Mister 880

US (1950): Drama/Comedy

The Skipper (Edmund Gwenn) is a charming old man loved by all his neighbors. What they don't know is that he is also Mr. 880, an amateurish counterfeiter who has amazingly managed to elude the Secret Service for 20 years. Edmund Goulding directs a Fox cast that also includes Burt Lancaster, Dorothy McGuire, Millard Mitchell and Minor Watson. (IMDb)

This film was based on the true story of Emerich Juettner, an elderly junk dealer in New York who, like the character in the movie, only used counterfeit dollar bills to make ends meet. He was arrested in 1948 and sentenced to nine months in jail and a $1 fine.
