Song-and-dance man Bert Kalmar (Fred Astaire) can't continue his stage career after an injury for a while, so he has to earn his money as a lyricst. Per chance he meets composer Harry Ruby (Red Skelton) and their first song is a hit. Ruby gets Kalmar to marry his former partner Jessie Brown (Vera-Ellen), and Kalmar and Jessie prevent Ruby from getting married to the wrong girls. But due to the fact that Ruby has caused a backer's withdrawal for a Kalmar play, they end their partnership.
Richard Thorpe directs this MGM release with a cast that also includes Arlene Dahl, Keenan Wynn, Gale Robbins, Gloria DeHaven and Debbie Reynolds. Musical numbers include "Mr. and Mrs. Hoofer at Home," "Where Did You Get That Girl?", "Who's Sorry Now", "Thinking of You", "My Sunny Tennessee", "So Long, Oo Long", "Three Little Words" and "Nevertheless (I'm in Love with You)."
