The Blue Veil
US (1951): Drama
This RKO film, directed by Curtis Bernhardt, is based on the 1942 French film Le Voile bleu. Jane Wyman, who won a best actress Golden Globe and Oscar® nomination for this drama, plays a young French woman who spends her life sacrificing for others. It all starts when she loses her husband and child during World War I. Totally heartbroken, Louise (Wyman) makes the decision to look after other people's children and spends her entire life giving to others. She gives so much, however, that she ends up poverty stricken and in dire trouble. At the last minute former charges of hers, all grown up now, step in to help her as a way to repay Louise back for her kindness. Cast also includes Charles Laughton, Joan Blondell, Richard Carlson, Agnes Moorehead, Cyril Cusack, Everett Sloane, Natalie Wood, Vivian Vance and Alan Napier. Evidently involved in some litigation and unavailable on video, the film is rarely seen. (amctv.com)
