Bright Victory

US (1951): Drama/Romance

Acclaimed performance by Arthur Kennedy as a vet blinded during WW II trying to readjust to civilian life. When a lovely young nurse (Peggy Dow) helps him in his transition, he is reluctant to leave the hospital. After hometown rejection, he returns to Dow to bravely face his future without denial. Kennedy was nominated for Best Actor, but the Award went to Humphrey Bogart for The African Queen. Directed by Mark Robson for Universal. Cast also includes Julie Adams, James Edwards, Will Geer, Nana Bryant, Jim Backus, Minor Watson and Richard Egan. Watch for Rock Hudson in a small role as a corporal. Blind veterans from the U.S. Army General Hospital in Pennsylvania, where much of the film was shot, served as extras and advisers. To identify with his role, Kennedy used black contact lenses to obscure his sight. (amctv.com)
