Carrie

US (1952): Drama

When a farm girl (Jennifer Jones) follows her dreams to turn-of-the-century Chicago, she enters a bleak world of grueling, poorly paid factory work. Determined to better her condition, she attaches herself to a salesman (Eddie Albert) and then to a married restaurant manager (Laurence Olivier), who loses everything in order to keep her. As she ascends to success in the footlights, she leaves behind the man who rescued her. A sterling performance by Olivier is the centerpiece of this drama based on the novel Sister Carrie by Theodore Dreiser. (When William Wyler chose to adapt the novel to the screen, the title was shortened to Carrie to discourage anyone from thinking it was about a nun.) Cast also includes Miriam Hopkins, Basil Ruysdael, Ray Teal, Barry Kelley, Sara Berner and William Reynolds. (Paramount) (amctv.com)
